2019 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST CHARLOTTE
- Saturday, Feb. 16 | 8 p.m. ET
- Televised on TNT
- Spectrum Center, Charlotte
Contestants
- Dennis Smith Jr.
- Miles Bridges
- John Collins
- Hamidou Diallo
- Winner: Hamidou Diallo
- The Slam Dunk Contest, as always, marked the end of the Saturday All-Star Weekend program. As every year, this contest is what the audience is desperately waiting for.
- The first to dunk was Collins, who jumped off the baseline, grabbed the board and slamed the ball on the other side. Just a solid 40 points. Diallo followed with a Windmill Dunk, also from the baseline. Russell Westbrook passed him the ball by the edge of the board (48 points).
- Smith needed five attempts for his 360-Windmill-Dunk. Nevertheless, the jury was impressed and gave the ex-Mavs player 45 points. Bridges wanted to finish between the legs, but he didn’t succeed in any of his four attempts and had to settle for a meager 33 points.
- Together with Charlotte legend Muggsy Bogues, Bridges entered the field a second time, wearing a Larry Johnson jersey this time. He wanted to honor his predecessors at the Hornets and even wore a false gold tooth, similar to the one worn by Johnson. The Dunk was finally a 360-windmill from the baseline, the first perfect score (50 points) of the night was achieved.
- Collins then tried to jump over a model plane. Before that, he put on a kind of flying cap and tied a white scarf around his neck. When the Hawks-Sophomore tried to jump over the model, he caught it with his feet and destroyed the plane. Still he got 42 points.
- The next dunk included a star: Smith jumped over rapper J. Cole and put on his high school jersey.

- Finally, Diallo was on again. He asked for the biggest person in the arena and invited Shaquille O’Neal to help him with his Dunk. With the Superman jersey underneath, he jumped over the Big Man, but used a hand to support himself. Up to his elbow, he rammed his arm into the basket and got stuck for a few seconds. All for a perfect score of 50 points.

- In the final, Smith unfortunately continued his series of messed-up attempts and couldn’t finish his 360-between the legs-dunk. After that he tried another completely different Dunk, but also the Tomahawk-Slam he did not succeed (35).
- Diallo also needed a second try, but at least he transformed his Dunk into a self-made one. The impressive thing was not so much the creativity, but the enormous jumping power of the rookie, who could look into the basket and collected 43 points.
- Smith took Dwyane Wade and Stephen Curry to the last Dunk. After several unsuccessful attempts, he finally managed to finish with both hands. He pushed away from Wade, but the difficulty to catch the ball in the air earned him the 50 points.
- Diallo had the rapper Quavo standing by, holding the ball over his head. The Thunder player stormed towards him, grabbed the ball and sunk the Windmill Dunk with both hands. With these 45 points he was the big winner of the 2019 Slam Dunk Contest.

SLAM DUNK RESULTS 2019
PLAYER | 1st ROUND | FINAL |
---|---|---|
Hamidou Diallo (OKL) | 48+50=98 | 43+45=88 |
Dennis Smith Jr. (NYK) | 45+50=95 | 35+50=85 |
Miles Bridges (CHA) | 33+50=88 | |
John Collins (ATL) | 40+42=82 |
Dennis Smith Jr
Dennis Smith Jr. has proven he is one of the NBA’s elite dunkers time and time again, both in-game and out. He is the only participant this year to have dunk contest experience, which might give him a slight edge. He took part last year as a rookie, but failed to make it past the first round. After being shipped to New York in the blockbuster trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas, it appears Smith has found a new home. He scored a career-high 31 points against the Pistons, and showed that he is ready for the contest in the same game…

Miles Bridges
Miles Bridges is one of two rookies to participate in the contest this year. Although he has only played in limited minutes this season, he has shown flashes of high-level talent and athleticism. Bridges, who has been dunking since he was in 7th grade, believes that the hometown crowd will have a positive effect, “I definitely feel like I have an advantage. There will be a lot of fans there – a lot of support. I’m used to the rim so that’ll be good.” According to Bovada, he comes into the contest with the second best odds of taking home the crown.
Miles Bridges is set to compete in the AT&T Slam Dunk contest during State Farm All-Star Saturday Night.

Hamidou Diallo
Although Diallo was just assigned to the Oklahoma City Blue, the Thunder’s G-League affiliate, he will still take his high-flying ability to Charlotte for the dunk contest. A rookie out of Kentucky, the 6′ 5″ shooting guard has averaged just over four points and two rebounds per game. Diallo told NewsOK that he knows he can’t go the traditional route when it comes to his dunks, “The dunks they used to do then are not in style anymore. People have seen those kinds of dunks in games and stuff like that, so you can’t really bring that to a contest. So you’ve got to be really creative and really use the internet to your advantage.” He will be the first participant from the Thunder since Serge Ibaka in 2011.
P.S. The highlights of his dunk contest against Zion Williamson from 2016 are astounding, so I highly recommend looking those up.

John Collins
In his sophomore season, Collins has proven that he is going to be a centerpiece for the Hawks franchise moving forward. He is averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds in only 30 minutes of play per game. Outside of Blake Griffin and Dwight Howard, big men have not seen much success as of late in the dunk contest. At 6-10, it is unlikely he takes home the win, mainly because the majority of his dunks are on people. Not to undermine his dunking ability or raw talent, but athleticism and agility is what wins the dunk contest, and it will be hard for him to top his competitors.
HBD John Collins!

- 2016 Slam Dunk Contest was a show for the ages, and Aaron Gordon arrived to New Orleans 2017 like clear favorite, but he had a disappointing performance and barely managed to dunk in the first round.
- Glenn Robinson III jumping over people with a couple of 50s scores slam dunks won the contest. Unfortunately, he received surgery on his ankle in mid-October and he still has not played in this season.
- New Cleveland Cavaliers player Larry Nance Jr. becomes the first contestant whose father was in a NBA Slam Dunk. Larry Nance Sr. won the first NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 1984.
* Donovan Mitchell substitutes Orlando Magic Aaron Gordon (hip injury)

- Zach Lavine won’t be back for a threepeat, and Aaron Gordon is a big favorite to win a trophy that he probably deserved last year in Toronto.
- These are the Slam Dunk Contest judges: Dominique Wilkins, Gary Payton, David Robinson, Chris Webber and Alonzo Mourning.
2016 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST TORONTO
- Winner: Zach Lavine (MIN)
- Zach LaVine became the sixth player to win at least two NBA Slam Dunk Contests, and it was not an easy feat.
- Two tiebreakers dunks were necessary in the final, because LaVine and Aaron Gordon couldn’t stop performing perfect dunks (eight 50’s total in the contest).
- A final round to be remembered. Probably the best NBA Slam Dunk Contest since Vince Carter’s 2000 exhibition.

PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST

- 4 different players fighting for the trophy: two sophomores and two fourth-year players, two guards and two forwards.
- Last year, Zach LaVine confirmed that he was the best new dunker in the league, will he be able to repeat his title?
- Nate Robinson in 2010 was the last player to win consecutive Slam Dunk contests.
2015 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST NEW YORK CITY
- Winner: Zach Lavine (MIN)
- Although rookie Zach Lavine is the second youngest winner of the Slam Dunk Contest (Kobe Bryant was younger in Cleveland 1997), the competition was a (super)man amongst boys. He didn’t save the best for last. Two effortless perfect dunks (50 points) in the first round demonstrated that he was the champion.
- After the failed test in 2014 with the Slam Dunk Contest by teams, with dunkers like Lavine there is still some hope regarding the future of this contest.
SLAM DUNK RESULTS 2015
Players | 1st Round | Final |
Zach Lavine | 50+50=100 | 45+49=94 |

Lavine Second Dunk (powerful behind the back)
PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST
- Washington Wizard John Wall was last year NBA All-Star Dunk Contest champion by fan voting.
- The competition was really different than your typical Slam Dunk Contest. 6 players competed representing East and West conferences, first in a ‘Freestyle Round’ and later in a ‘Battles Round’.
- The outcome was very poor, one of the weakest contests I can remember, so I hope that in 2015 edition there will be some changes to bring back the excitement to the contest.
- For the first time since 2012, the NBA Slam Dunk Contest is back to a 4-contestants format.
- There will be two dunks in the first round for each player. The two dunkers with the highest composite scores from the first round advance to the final round to make two more dunks.
- Lot of potential with one rookie and three sophomores who are going to play in the NBA Rising Stars Game the day before the contest.
- These are the Slam Dunk Contest judges: Julius Erving, Tiny Archibald, Bernard King, Chris Mullin and Walt Frazier.
2014 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST NEW ORLEANS
- Winner: East Team – John Wall (WAS)
- East totally dominated the Slam Dunk Contest.
- First winning the Freestyle Round (3-0 votes) and later the ‘Battles Round’ (3-0 again).
- John Wall was named the best dunker by fan voting.

PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST
- Four first-time contestants will join last year winner Terrence Ross and Pacers star Paul George, who didn’t pass the first round in 2012.
- After a few years of low-profile names, New Orleans Slam Dunk Contest includes three NBA All-Stars.
- There are three players from East conference and three more from West conference and one HUGE change in the rules of the contest: The winner of the contest will be a conference not a player.
- The Slam Dunk Contest will feature two rounds, Freestyle Round and Battles Round. In the Freestyle Round, the three dunkers for each conference will have a 90 second limit to make as many dunks as they want, in the order they want and assisting each other if necessary. Each player has to make at least one dunk. The panel of judges will determine which conference win the Freestyle Round.
- The Battle Round will consist of head-to-head matchups (East dunkers vs. the West dunkers). The conference who won Freestyle Round will be given the choice of order for dunks in the Battle Round. Each player will be limited to three attempts to complete a Battle Round dunk. Upon losing a head-to-head battle, the losing dunker is eliminated from the competition. The first conference to win three head-to-head battles will win the Battle Round and be crowned Slam Dunk champions.
2013 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST HOUSTON
- Winner: Terrence Ross (TOR)
- This contest was supposed to have a really high level, and started very good with the first three East dunks.
- Later, Kenneth Faried and Eric Bledsoe needed a lot of attempts to finish easy dunks, and in their second dunks both, James White and Gerald Green (two of the favorites), wasted 90+ seconds without any success.
- Terrence Ross deserved to be the winner (thanks to fan voting) with four slam dunks full of athletic exhibition.
- Jeremy Evans is a deserving finalist who almost repeated the Champion title.

2012 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST ORLANDO
- Winner: Jeremy Evans (UTA)
- Utah Jazz forward Jeremy Evans won, what in our opinion was a very weak Slam Dunk Contest, but he was the contestant with the highest fan support between more than 3m votes sent.
- His best dunk was a jump over teammate Gordon Hayward where he caught and dunk the balls Hayward threw in the air.
- The contest included guest stars (Kevin Hart and Puff Daddy), tributes (White Men Can’t Jump film, Larry Bird, Karl Malone and Cedric Ceballos) and even a dunk by Paul George with the lights turned off.

PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST
- This year’s contest will feature a new single-round format. Each player has to execute three dunks, and only fan voting will determine who is the champion.
- Besides SMS and nba.com, fans can also vote their favorites by Twitter with the hashtag #SpriteSlam after all the players have completed their first dunk.
Player | Team | Height | Weight | Slam Dunk | Best Dunks |

* Jeremy Evans replaced New York Knicks guard Iman Shumpert, who was injured (left patella tendinitis).
2011 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST LOS ANGELES
- Winner: Blake Griffin (LAC)
- Blake Griffin confirmed his Favorit roll winning the fan voting after jumping over a car with a gospel choir singing “I believe I can fly”.
- Javale McGee had a original staging in the contest: first a dunk with 2 balls and 2 baskets and later a dunk with 3 balls.
- Serge Ibaka made the classic free throw dunk and another grabbing a teddy bear with his mouth.
- DeMar DeRozan made a good performance, with a between-the-legs alleyoop and a reverse windmill.
SLAM DUNK RESULTS 2011
Players | First Round | Final |
Blake Griffin | 49+46:95 | 68% |
Javale McGee | 50+49:99 | 32% |
DeMar DeRozan | 44+50:94 | |
Serge Ibaka | 45+45:90 |
PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST
- Young power influx to the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Last year champion Nate Robinson won’t defend his title, and four players (mostly tall players) who are debuting in the contest will fight to become the 20th winner of the Slam Dunk Contest.
- Blake Griffin is the fan favorite. Coming back from a season-ending injury, the powerful dunks of the Los Angeles Clippers rookie are always between the NBA top plays.
- Serge Ibaka is familiar with this kind of event, winning the Spanish dunk contest before jumping to the NBA.
- DeMar DeRozan is the only guard between the participants and replaces Brandon Jennings who is currently sidelined with a foot injury.
- JaVale Mcgee‘s height is a rareness in the Slam Dunk Contest, and could become the first 7 footer to win it.
2010 NBA ALL STAR SLAM DUNK CONTEST ARLINGTON
- Winner: Nate Robinson (NY)
- Knicks guard Nate Robinson took home his third Slam Dunk Title over Raptors rookie DeMar DeRozan, winning the fan voting by a small difference of 51% to 49%.
- He is the first player to win the contest thrice.
- Shannon Brown was really disappointing, eliminated in the first round after two weak dunks.
- Gerald Wallace showed that his time for this contest has passed.
SLAM DUNK RESULTS 2010
Players | First Round | Final |
Nate Robinson | 44+45:89 | 51% |
DeMar DeRozan | 42+50:92 | 49% |
Shannon Brown | 37+41:78 | |
Gerald Wallace | 38+40:78 |
PREVIEW SLAM DUNK CONTEST
- There were no surprises with the announcement of the NBA Slam Dunk 2010 contestants, all the Lebron hype about making the Slam Dunk Contest is clearly forgotten. There’s no Superman (Dwight Howard) this year, so Nate Robinson won’t need his Kryptonite dunk to repeat his 2009 title. He will compete against Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace and Lakers guard Shannon Brown.
- Wallace returned to the All-Star, 8 years after his first Slam Dunk Contest, the new “longevity record” in the contest, beating Clyde Drexler who had a 5 years span (1984-1989) between his debut and his last appearance in the contest.
- In 2002 (Jason Richardson first All-Star show), he finished with 84 points, 1 point short to advance to the final.
- Shannon Brown will perform for the first time in Dallas. He has been a fan favorite in the last months with his huge leaps, and was a safe bet to take part in this year’s contest. You can visit LetShannonDunk.com
- The last player to put his name in the contest is Raptors rookie DeMar DeRozan. Last year Rudy Fernandez won the rookie voting for the fourth spot on the 2009 Slam Dunk contest. This season the NBA has made a new system called “All Star Slam Dunk-In”, to be played at halftime of the Friday’s Rookie Challenge.
- DeRozan competed against Clipper Eric Gordon. Both players had to make two dunks and DeRozan dominated easily making his dunks in the first attempt, including the best dunk, a great jump for a between-the-legs dunk. DeRozan got 61% of the fan SMS and online voting, while Gordon only had 31%.
